…even hotter Spanish nights

vogue mallWithout the close proximity of clear, blue water to dip into or a light breeze from across the seas to cool the skin the nights in Pollenca, Mallorca seemed even hotter than their delish, lazy days.  Having made the mistake, many moons ago I might add, of taking heels, fitted clothing and high~waisted anything  for the evenings of a warm European holiday I learnt from those mistakes. My evenings were for loose, drappy clothing that skimmed the body and created it’s own breeze, damp clean hair tucked away and a faithful and trusty flat ~ black and tan is all I took. Went with everything. The heel was not invited.

Hot Spanish days…

DSC02740

The dry heat of Northern Mallorca, the warm, aqua waters & the simple yet ridiculously gorgeous food made me so happy. I turned my phone off for a week, read through 3 unfinished books that have sat by my bed for far too long and loved the fact that my summer wardrobe go the catwalk showcasing that it so rightly deserves.

Denim cut offs, loose cotton tops, strapless java print dresses, flowing printed culottes, neon nails & loose, leather flip flops made my days long, languid and lushious…

As per usual my fellow travelling gypset was none other than Bestie From Africa who has been taking my photo, applying sun cream to my back, delivering worthy discussions and supplying many laughs for 21 years now.

I couldn’t think of a better travel companion to traipse the world with….and who is always up for a debate on the best nail varnish colour to wear on a beach holiday.

Red nix trips: Vienna ~ Day drei

DSC02627

While the weather forecast for both Berlin and Vienna weren’t in the late 20’s, as I’d hoped, once I got to each city and spent many an hour traipsing their cobbled streets and discovering mini treasures {the not so mini treasure above is Vienna’s parliament building we walked past one day} I was glad of the slightly cooler temperatures. My leather shorts were my final outfit for the beautiful city of Vienna and I couldn’t think of anything more fitting than topping off my pins in some soft leather hot pants.

Red nix trips: Vienna ~ Day zwei

DSC02589

While I only took with me a small wheelie case and a rucksack I managed to severely over pack! I tightly rolled enough outfits for everyday…and for every night. Both days in Berlin saw us leave the house in the morning and not return until late at night so although some outfits didn’t get worn I had to make sure some of my ‘Eastern European’ pieces were worn and loved.

When I thought about what to pack & what I wanted to wear for my week long trip I thought about ~OF COURSE ~ my Austrian dirndl, floral vintage dresses, heidi plaits for the hair and my leather lederhosen. Check back tomorrow to see those beauties in action.

Red nix trips: Vienna ~ Day eins

DSC02557

Vienna was ridiculous. And when I say ridiculous I really mean RIDIC!

LORDY, LORDY, LORDY! What opulence, grandeur and excessivel use of gold. I loved it! After a day train all the way from Berlin, through Prague and finally to Vienna I went to meet Cousin Will ~ who was working there for a couple of months ~ and Bro Dude who came out for the weekend to join us. We hopped on and off old trams, walked along the graffiti laden river, turned every corner to be faced with churches, mansions, monuments, cathedrals, drank weiss wein ger spritz and explored palaces full of art, statues and even more gold.

Red nix trips: Berlin

DSC02504

While Berlin wasn’t exactly what I expected I was pleasantly surprised at what she had to offer. I set off on the Tuesday from London town to my beloved Paris with just a quick skip from Gare du Nord to Gare du l’Est and then hopped on the overnight sleeper all the way to Berlin. I had two full days in Berlin with my good friend Debbie Veseywho I used to work with at Orla Kiely, and took in this sparsely populated and, at times, often confused capital city that is full of artists, musicians and bon vivants. We wandered the old and the new parts, took a boat trip whilst wearing a sequinned jacket {why not?!} did some amazing vintage shopping, ate so cheaply and daydreamed about what it would be like to live in this up and coming city.

Sensible shoes

DSC02434

As I fill my Mother in on my plans for the next week ~ Berlin, Vienna, Paris ~ her parting words are

‘And I hope you’ve packed sensible shoes’

I desperately want to revert into a teenager telling her very loudly that

‘I am quite capable of making my own shoe decisions, thank you very much, and should I choose to take ‘silly’ shoes to Europe then I will do just that! ‘

BUT…..I know she is right. Of course she is! These are the words that impart to all of my customers ~ Comfort is key ~ If I’m going to be hopping on and off trains with a wheelie case, traipsing round beautiful cities all day and expecting my feet to accompany me I need to house these plates of meat in the shoe equivalent of Lucozade. I found these flat, hardcore, rubber soled beauties in the sale at Topshop and am very excited about them being my travel companians across the continent.

DSC02432

I also bought these navy geek chic ‘school girl’ flatties but that’s another story for another day….

WEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…I’m off My Shoelets. Not for long mind. I shall return to the shores of this tiny island of bad weather and great humour next Wednesday. My packing was exceptional so will return with tales of fun tailored times in Europe.

Auf wiedersahn and Au Revoir…parting is such sweet sorrow. I’m off for a Schnitzel.

Inspire me

While I am always inspired by Jamie Beck’s photography, the latest post on her blog  inspired me to get to a beach, make this summer all about the swimsuit and to seek out the sun…SOON.

Who’s with me and where we heading?

Business in Paris

What started off this whole detoxing business for me was the idea of shopping your wardrobe.  I simply love the idea of finding a fabulous outfit, pieces that you wouldn’t have necessarily put together before, from clothes that you already own.  Knowing my former Flatmate’s wardrobe like the back of my hand I was super excited to go and give her a Sweet treat and find two outfits for business meetings she had in Paris.  Having a list of guidelines to adhere to narrowed down the choices I could pick for her but is always when I’m at my best:

* Travelling by Eurostar on both days I need a comfortable outfit to sit in and lug my bag around in

* I’ll be on the go all day, going from meeting to meeting, so will need good footwear that doesn’t make my feet ache

* I need to be warm but also smart, especially for the meetings I have on Thursday

* I don’t want to be carrying too much stuff with me

I was in my element!  As you know I have documented well my love of Paris and dressing for her {see here and here} and knew exactly the type of things Flattie would look good in.  Unfortunately I had to deal with the below state of her clothes:

You can tell she hasn’t been living with me for a while!

Regardless of the jumble sale style of her wardrobe rail I ventured on and the first outfit I found for her involved cool, chic winter whites, sleek greys and a killer boot

A cozy knit dress to travel in, a sheer pussy bow blouse as a nod to Paris, a smart cream jacket plus faux fur gillet, a floral print scarf to accesorize with, classic boots and leather bag to hold her ipad, travel guide, cd’s for her client, phone and wallet. PERFECT!

Day two required a smarter outfit but still needed that warmth, comfort, smartness and a little competition for the Parisian woman.

This involved a stretchy pencil skirt, a thin knit, a Westwood~esque jacket {dyed by Tim~gifted to me~passed on to Flattie}, cute and comfortable Mary~Jane’s and the ultimate accessory for France ~ the black silk scarf.

Her underwear was matching, her nightwear sexy, her hair and make-up immaculate and her luggage classic.

Paris you’d better watch out…someone’s coming to show you how it’s done and they mean business.

Inspire me

As shallow as it might sound I like beautiful things and I like my life to be filled with beauty.  However, as we all know, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and one woman’s beauty is another’s Frankie Boyle naked.  I constantly harp on here about mixing and matching, opposites attract and the juxtaposition of things. Well that applies to every aspect of my life. Wandering along the leafy, tree lined Highline in NYC, at dusk, the enormous buildings either side made me so happy, inspired me and made me want to change….A change with regards to what I don’t know but the architecture, that I papped for my Instagram and then later shared on my Twitter {@redshoesnonix}, was ~ to me ~ beautiful.

I don’t know what this building is, whether it’s offices or housing but I do know that it’s my screen saver on my iphone and every time I look at it I want to live in NYC, wear fabulous heels, discover London more, take amazing photos, travel, find the perfect rucksack, make a dress, write a book, own a capsule wardrobe {when do I ever say things like that!?} have great hair, buy killer underwear…….

She inspires me and for that I am most thankful.

If you’re not already following me in Instagram take a look over here {redshoesnoknickers} and see what you’ve been missing while I’ve been in NYC.
